We’re acting now to remove known blockages in the network. This is to help reduce the risk of sewage flooding in your community and protect the environment. That’s why we’re in your neighbourhood, to clear, monitor and maintain local sewer networks close to your home.

We take 1 billion litres of used water away from homes and businesses every day, including drainage from roads, highways and public spaces. Our sewers take a great deal of resource to Keep It Clear especially when we need to remove around 40,000 blockages a year. This could include installing sewer monitors which are clever bits of kit that keep an eye on the sewer levels, making it easier for us to spot blockages and potential problems that could cause pollutions and flooding in the community.

Our Keep It Clear programme is all about working together with communities, councils and partners to proactively prevent blockages from happening.

We need to make sure during extreme weather events the sewers and pipes remain clear to deal with the rapid increase of used water flowing through them.

Why are Anglian Water working with partners?

We take 1 billion litres of used water away from homes and businesses every day, including drainage from roads, highways and public spaces. It takes a great deal of resource to clean, monitor and maintain our sewer network, that’s why we’re working with partners across our region to help proactively identify and prevent blockages. You may receive a visit from one of our teams to let you know what we’re doing. This can include installation of kit, jetting and cleaning of our sewers. We will also give you some useful information on how you can contribute to preventing blockages in the future, such as only flushing the 3 P’s: Pee, Poo and Paper and putting Fats, Oils and Greases (FOGs) in the bin.

Will my property be affected?

You don’t need to do anything. If the you have a manhole in your garden, we may need to take a look at the sewer to either clear a blockage or to install one of our new monitors. If this is the case, we’ll knock on the door to see it’s a convenient time to take a look. If no one is around, we’ll pop a contact card through the door to ask you to get in touch to arrange a good time for us to visit.

Will this have an impact on my water supply?

There will be no impact to your water supply or pressure during this work, you can still use your taps and flush loos as normal.

Will the work address the problem with flooding in the area?

We’re taking action now to remove known blockages in the network, but there are many factors to a sewer flooding, such as extreme weather events and overloaded sewers. You can help prevent sewage flooding by keeping the pipes clear.

What is the Dynamic Sewer Visualisation Programme?

We have an exciting new programme underway to install some handy kit into our most challenging, repeat issue sewers based on hot spot location data. This is a proactive, proven and evidenced based approach; using new technologies and analytics to detect potential blockages. The data from these monitors feeds into our analytical platform, where our teams will analyse and send technicians to investigate potential issues. Our end goal is to see a reduction in pollutions, a key priority of ours, and flooding events by limiting escapes from the network. This enables our Operational teams to get to issues faster than they previously would have, minimising impact on our customers and the environment.
