Integrated management system

Anglian Water operates several management systems, adopting an integrated approach to the operational and management of held standards, assessment schemes and specifications, ensuring they are scoped and configured to deliver the best overall level of assurance and value to the business. This approach is supported by the Integrated Management System (IMS) Policy which unifies our management system processes into a single operating framework.

Occupational health, safety, and wellbeing management system

To ensure the health, safety, and wellbeing of our employees and the safety of the public, Anglian Water has implemented a company-wide occupational health, safety, and wellbeing management system. This is externally assessed and certificated by a third party for compliance with international health and safety standards, ISO 45001:2018 and ISO 45003:2021.

The system covers all activities undertaken by Anglian Water and demonstrates our commitment to reducing the exposure of our employees and all other parties to occupational health and safety risks associated with our activities. In addition, the system provides a consistent and proven management approach to our health and safety risks, both present and future, and enables assurance of compliance with applicable health and safety legislation and regulation and of due diligence generally. The system is regularly updated to continually improve our occupational health and safety performance.

A key element of the management system is our health, safety and wellbeing policy which defines at the highest-level Anglian Water’s commitment to occupational health and safety.

Nothing that we do at Anglian Water is so important that we cannot find the time to do it safely. The health and safety of our employees and anyone who is affected by our operations is paramount.

Quality management system

Our established Quality Management System (QMS) is externally assessed and certified by our third-party assurance provider for compliance with International Standard BS EN ISO 9001:2015. The scope of system coverage is:

The QMS encompasses 99% of the facilities owned by Anglian Water, which include water and water recycling infrastructure and non-infrastructure assets operated by Anglian Water Services, the laboratory, biogas combined heat and power plants, and mobile emergency equipment. The only exclusions are our office facilities which are managed by an appointed third-party.

The standard outlines asset management best practice, detailing a standard against which we can measure our own asset management function whilst challenging and continually improving what we do. The scope of system coverage is:

“The Asset Management System is relation to the governance of water treatment, water distribution, sewage treatment and sewage networks, excluding activities associated with IT and recreation assets”.

By working collaboratively across all the value chain parties with a common goal to reduce carbon. The scope of this system coverage is:

”Water and Water Recycling Infrastructure and Non-Infrastructure Assets operated by AWS, AWS Office locations, Laboratory, Biogas CHP plants and Mobile Emergency Equipment“.

Business Continuity Management System

We are assessed to ensure we have sufficient resilience arrangements in place, and we can so we can respond quickly to recover any critical activity that is interrupted and that we are fully prepared for emergency response or workplace recovery situations.

This is not limited or restricted to just business continuity and covers all aspects of business resilience including security, emergency preparedness, training and exercising, impact management and any other arrangements.

Our current external certification body for all systems is BSI which is accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

Purpose Driven Publicly Available Specification

As the lead sponsor we’ve worked with BSI and an advisory panel consisting of leading responsible businesses, academics, charities and sustainability organisations to produce PAS 808:2022 ‘Purpose-driven organisations – Worldviews, principles and behaviours for delivering sustainability’ which empowers organisations to embrace purpose-driven practices, address global challenges and take accountability for sustainable success.

In 2023, we went through our first maturity assessment which explored the extent to which the worldviews, principles and behaviours on purpose are embedded in the organisation. It sampled all levels and facets of the organisation; including some strategically important projects.
