Speak to your retailer

Your retailer can support you in becoming more water-efficient by offering various tools and services designed to help your business reduce water usage and lower your bills. Retailers and wholesalers frequently have projects and incentives that you might be able to participate in. Additionally, your retailer can help you monitor your water consumption to identify patterns and opportunities for efficiency improvements. You can find the contact details of who your water retailer is on your most recent water bill.

Employee Inclusion

  • Share Water-Saving Tips: Provide information on how to save water through newsletters, posters, or emails.
  • Employee Suggestion Scheme: Implement a system where employees can suggest water-saving ideas.
  • Appoint a Water Efficiency Ambassador in the workplace: This person can collaborate with colleagues to identify current water wastage and suggest improvements.

Kitchenettes and Canteen areas

  • Opt for a dishwasher: Instead of washing plates and mugs individually. Modern dishwashers typically use significantly less water compared to hand washing.
  • Fill a bowl with water: Rather than letting the tap run continuously, which helps prevent water wastage.
  • Install a water cooler: To provide employees with direct access to cold water, eliminating the need to run the tap.

In toilets or washrooms

  • Taps: Dripping taps can waste significant amounts of water over time, leading to higher bills. Encourage employees to report any leaking taps and remind everyone to turn off taps when not in use. When replacing taps, consider automatic sensor versions that turn on and off without manual intervention.
  • Hosepipes: Many businesses use hosepipes for cleaning. Ensure these are turned off when not in use to prevent unnecessary water waste.
  • Urinal Flushing: Uncontrolled urinals can waste hundreds of litres per hour. Installing a control device can reduce water consumption by up to 70% by stopping flushing when the premises are not in use.
  • Leaking Toilets: Modern dual flush toilets can leak due to sticky buttons or faulty valves, wasting over 250 litres an hour. Regularly check all toilets for leaks and faulty cisterns.
  • Showers: If your workplace provides shower facilities, consider using aerated showerheads to reduce water use by up to 50%.
