Each year, our Anglian Water vans cover 20 million miles on the road. That’s the equivalent of 24 trips to the moon and back. And it’s why switching to electric is so important.
At Anglian Water, we’re always thinking about the future. That’s why you might have already seen our electric vehicles out on the road in your community.
We’re excited to announce that as part of our ambition to reach net zero by 2030, we’re investing in another 300 fully electric and hybrid vehicles. Including 60 range-extended hybrid vans, 43 fully electric small vans, and 200 electric cars. Investing in electric vehicles gives us the opportunity to use renewable and sustainable energy, and to make a positive impact on our environment by reducing our carbon emissions.
We're going to be decarbonising our fleet by replacing 90 per cent of all small vehicles with electric equivalents. And to keep our new electric vehicles on the road we've installed an additional 120 electric charging points across our region, which means not only can our new electric vans stay charged but our staff can recharge their own electric cars too. At some sites, these will be powered by renewable energy generated through sources such as combined heat and power, solar and wind: delivering a fully renewable process from end-to-end.
In the cases where we can't switch to electric, we're opting for alternative fuels instead. We're going to be gradually switching medium-sized vehicles to hydrogen or alternative fuels such as biomethane and we'll also be changing 55 per cent of our HGVs to using Liquefied Natural Gas. We’ll switch 100 per cent of our gas oil demand to hydrotreated vegetable oils (HVOs) and develop a plan to make the most of the opportunities and benefits for hydrogen across everything we do.
Making history
We’re also making history by using the industry’s first fully electric jetting 4-ton van. Used for industrial sewer cleaning, the van will be silent even while operational, allowing the company to minimise disruption and noise in local communities during late night call outs.
Mick Farmer, Head of Fleet Services at Anglian Water, said: “Innovations like this new fully electric jetting van have the potential to revolutionise our everyday work. We’re always working to eliminate the impact of what we do on the environment and being able to jet clean sewers with an electric jetting machine on electric van will not only cut carbon emissions, but prevent sewer blockages which can cause pollution.”
