Agriculture is the backbone of East Anglia, but in the driest region of the UK, safeguarding water supplies for now and the future is essential. Our region proudly provides a fifth of the nation’s crops and a third of its vegetables.
With climate change having a big impact on the weather, causing more regular food shortages and interest rates increasing, we understand the importance of working closely with farmers across our region to ensure not only healthy crops and a thriving rural economy but also to protect our most precious resource, water.
Improving soil health
Meet Richard, he’s one of the many farmers who we’re working with to help improve their soil health through our cover crop initiative.
Planting cover crops is simply having crops in the ground all year round, this builds the soils’ resilience to extreme weather conditions, improving soil moisture capacity during drought - meaning farmers need less and less water every year to maintain their crops.
We’re working with farmers across our region, and will have planted over 1000 hectares (that’s like 2000 football fields!), by the end of September 2023. Explore more ways you can improve the health of the soil in your garden with our top tips and growing green advice.
Improving drinking water quality
We believe it’s vital for all water companies and farmers to be working alongside each other to protect our water resources. Our teams have been working in the community and with agronomists to support farmers. Meet the team and find out more.
