Pipework blockages caused by flushing wet wipes, cotton buds and other sanitary products down your loo can lead to bad smells, home sewer flooding and even expensive plumbing bills.
To help keep your pipework clear and reduce the risk of any costly plumbing bills, make sure to only flush the 3Ps down your toilet: Pee, Poo and Paper.
Wet wipes branded as ‘flushable’ are becomingly increasingly popular – but most are not actually suitable to be flushed down your loo! Only wipes that have the official 'fine to flush' logo on their packaging have passed certain sewer-approved testing which means they are safer to flush.
But our advice is to throw all wet wipes in the bin as only then can you be sure they won’t block your pipes.
Small swaps to save
Period products are also one of the biggest causes of blockages in our sewer network - nearly 2 billion are flushed down the toilet every year, which cause blockages in the network and in your pipes at home. By simply swapping to re-usable products such as menstrual cups and period pants, you could save money and help prevent blockages in your pipes. Use our periodic calculator to find out how much money you could save.
Whether you choose to use disposable period products or re-usable ones, all sanitary items like wet wipes, cotton pads, cotton buds and nappies need to go in the bin and not flushed down the loo.
