As part of our Alliance partnership project, we’ve designed and sponsored two courses run by the College of West Anglia in Wisbech. This will increase our region’s skill pool and enable us to offer apprenticeship interviews with our Alliance partners.

It began with the Wisbech 2020 programme. Following discussions between us, our suppliers, Fenland District Council, Cambridgeshire County Council and the local MP, we agreed the challenges Wisbech faced were greater than other areas. A national index measuring: health, education, crime, income, employment and housing & services barriers found Wisbech has four of the eight most deprived areas in the UK, placing it among the top 10% nationally.

The Green Skills Academy at the College of West Anglia in Wisbech, will be a new training centre (launched at Business in the Community’s (BiTC) ‘Seeing is Believing’ event in July 2024). It will provide a vital hub for local people keen to pursue a career helping the environment. It will be based at a new, sustainable building, powered by solar panels and with rainwater harvesting technology installed to reduce water use.

The project has received £2 million funding from Anglian Water’s Alliance partners including Balfour Beatty, Barhale, Clancy, Claret, Costain, Danaher & Walsh, Farrans, Jacobs, Kier, Morrison, Mott MacDonald Bentley, MWH Treatment, Public Sewer Services, Skanska and Sweco. £2 million of funding has also been received from the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority’s Recycled Local Growth Fund, as well as £200,000 from the College of West Anglia.

The college opened its doors for teaching on initial courses in sustainability and wildlife conservation in September 2024, with a full offering to be made available at the new building from late 2025.

Anglian Water has proposed £9 billion of investment into the East of England between 2025 and 2030. Most of the work is specifically targeted at protecting and enhancing the East of England’s natural environment and providing resilience to climate change. In order to deliver this plan, Anglian Water will need to recruit thousands of new employees, including apprentices – many of them into green jobs. So, keep an eye on the College of West Anglia website for exciting new opportunities.

Construction Course Summary

The pre-apprenticeship skills programme works in collaboration with Anglian Water and its Alliance partners, providing a fully employer-supported multi-skill construction course.

These courses have been designed with the specific aim of attracting new talent into the water sector, preparing learners for opportunities as apprentices within Anglian Water Alliance partner companies.

The programme is very hands-on, you will gain knowledge of a wide variety of subjects including health, safety and welfare in construction, principles of building construction information and communication, construction site protection barriers, construction site practical skills and much more.

You’ll be given everything you need to succeed; access to specialist speakers and lessons, networking opportunities, access to plant and materials, mentoring and site visits, all valuable experiences of the world of work. Once you complete the course, you’ll have a clear understanding of your potential career paths and the foundation knowledge, skills and behaviours wanted by our partners.
